What is RTP? Why does it matter?

RTP, or Return to Player, is a percentage that indicates how much a casino game pays back to players over time. For example, a slot with a 97% RTP is expected to return $97 for every $100 wagered — over a large number of spins.

High RTP games offer better long-term value, and savvy players prioritize casinos with a strong portfolio of these titles. The average online slot RTP is about 96%. So I always look for games with RTPs of 96% or higher to increase my chances of winning.

Expert insight icon Expert Insight:

The average RTP for slots at online casinos is significantly higher than brick-and-mortar casinos. The reason is because those physical casinos have so much overhead to pay for, such as rent and utilities.

How is RTP determined? Is it legit?

Game developers initially determine a game’s Return to Player (RTP) percentage. While making the game, developers first calculate the expected payout ratio based on the game’s mechanics, such as the number of reels, paylines, symbols, bonus features, and odds of various outcomes. Then, to validate this figure, developers often run millions of automated game simulations using random number generators (RNGs) to ensure the actual payout aligns with the theoretical RTP.

Once finalized, the game is submitted to independent testing laboratories, such as eCOGRA or iTech Labs. These companies audit the game’s code and RNG performance to certify the RTP accuracy.

In states with regulated real-money online casinos, game developers have to show that their RTP number is legit before the state’s regulators will allow the game onto online casinos. All reputable social casinos also only work with developers that get their games independently tested.

This thorough process means that if you are playing at a real-money online casino that is licensed in a state, you can rest assured that the stated RTP is accurate. Unregulated offshore sites do not have this protection and, indeed, are known for using scam games. That’s why I never recommend you play on those. On PlayUSA, we also have reviews of hundreds of sweeps sites so that you can see if those are legit as well.

Which casino games have the highest returns?

Generally speaking, table games have a higher RTP than online slots. But really, all different games have different payout rates. Below, I break down the best-paying games within all of the major game categories.

Slot machine payout percentages

Online slots are, generally speaking, the No. 1 choice for most players. And while your win or loss on any one spin is absolutely random, you can increase your chances of winning by finding slots with the best RTPs.

The payout percentages, or return-to-player ratios, represent a percentage of total bets that the players can expect to win back over a period of time. They are based on thousands — if not hundreds of thousands — of spins or rounds played, not just on your own experience at one slot.

We have a whole page dedicated to Dr. Jekyll Goes Wild.

How slots differ from other online casino games

In general, slots can have the broadest range of returns in the casino. The game percentage rate can range from as low as 85 to the upper 90s. Generally, slots do offer some of the lower RTP numbers at an online casino, but if you shop around, you can find some gems.

For example, Starmania, which is available at online casinos including Golden Nugget and Caesars, has an impressive return-to-player score of 97.87%.

To throw another wrench into the works, sometimes, the same game can have different RTPs.

A good example is Cleopatra from IGT, which you can find at many internet casinos including Caesars. The standard game offers a competitive RTP of 95.02%. However, there is also a jackpot version of the game, where the RTP increases along with the jackpot.

At reset (just after the jackpot has been won), the RTP of the game is reduced to 91.01%, rising to 93.03% when it reaches the magic million-dollar mark. If the jackpot continues to increase, you could see an RTP that eclipses the standard game and moves closer to 100%.

This variation in the RTP when playing slots is also in marked contrast to other games at the casino, where you’ll usually find a more static line.

Some online casinos, like DraftKings and Golden Nugget prominently display each slot’s RTP or make it easily accessible when you press the info button (the i with a circle around it.)

Blackjack payout percentages

The common RTP percentage for online blackjack games is 99.54%, which leaves only 0.46% for the house edge. However, not all real-money blackjack games have the same percentages. There are plenty of factors that impact those numbers.

For example, a single-deck blackjack game that offers a 3:2 payout for a natural blackjack will have a house edge of just 0.16%, which means that the payout percentage will be set at 99.84%. On the other hand, if a natural blackjack receives a 6:5 payout, the house edge will grow to 1.55%.

By taking a closer look at the blackjack pay table, we can conclude that all blackjack versions with a 3:2 payout structure beat the ones with a 6:5 payout, no matter the number of decks in the game.

In addition, specific rules and side bets can affect the payout. For example, if you can’t double down or re-split in specific situations, your chances of a payout will decrease.

Also, when a blackjack game offers a perfect pairs side bet, the payout percentages in that game will drop to 93.89%. Another important example is when the dealer stands on soft 17 rather than hitting. This will improve the payout percentage by 0.22%.

The bottom line is that you need the right choice of blackjack games and an optimum betting strategy to get the best odds for a payout. Here are some versions that count among the more generous ones:

Rank Game Payout % Max Payout
1 Blackjack multi-hand 99.6% $32,000
2 Blackjack single-hand 99.42% $40,000
3 777 Blazing Blackjack 99.33% $77,700
4 Blackjack Pro multi-hand 99.13% $12,000
5 Blackjack Pro Atlantic City single-hand 99.13% $2,500

Roulette payout percentages

Roulette is an iconic game due to its long history. live-dealer roulette, has the same structure and odds as a brick-and-mortar casino.

The game has three primary versions — EuropeanFrench and American roulette. Their rules affect the return-to-player ratios. The most notable difference between the three is in the number of pockets on the wheel. The European and French roulette games have 37 colored and numbered pockets, one of which is the green zero, while the American version has 38 pockets, thanks to an additional double zero.

Without wanting to sound unpatriotic, the one game you’ll want to avoid is American roulette. The double zero is the reason why the house edge in the American version is higher than in European roulette. The payout percentage in American roulette comes in at 94.74% (5.26% house edge), while European roulette offers a payout percentage of 97.3% (2.7% house edge).

The French version, meanwhile, has a specific set of rules — the En Prison and La Partage rules.

The En Prison rule says that, in the event of the ball landing on zero, all players who have made an even bet can put their bets in prison, hence the name of the rule. If they have a winning bet in the next round, they can get a full refund of the previous wager.

La Partage is similar, only this time, you will be allowed to get half of the bet. With these rules, the house edge drops to just 1.35%.

Naturally, the percentages also differ from provider to provider, but these rates represent the standard values in most online casinos. See our page on roulette payouts for more.

Thus, if you do plan on playing roulette, aim to BetMGM in Michigan).

You can see the payout rates for all of the main roulette variants in the following table:

Rank Game Payout % Max Payout
1 French roulette 97.3% $46,200
2 European roulette 97.29% $46,200
3 Roulette Advanced 97.29% $41,200
4 100/1 roulette 96.18% $100,000
5 American roulette 94.74% $46,200
6 Live dealer roulette 94.76% $17,800

Video poker payout percentages

Video poker games have been present in land-based casinos since the ’70s, and their popularity has re-emerged with the rise of online casinos. Video poker probably owes its popularity to the fact that it offers the biggest payout percentage of all casino games.

All video poker titles are based on five-card draw poker, which is the simplest type of poker out there. As a player, you will get a five-card hand and a choice to exchange zero to five cards in a bid to build the strongest hand. As such, video poker is a game that depends on both luck and skill.

Which video poker game has the best RTP?

The best video poker game to play is Jacks or Better by GameKing, which is available at most online casinos. This game has an RTP of 99.54%.

Close behind Jacks or Better is Double Double Bonus King with an RTP of 99.51%. The difference is so small that it’s probably a good idea to play the game you enjoy the most of the two.

Other popular video poker games can be 8/6 or 8/5 Jacks or Better, Tens or BetterBonus PokerJoker Poker and many others. Their bonuses and variations can boost the theoretical return over 100% if you manage to play with perfect video poker strategy (more on perfect strategy below). Also, the increased payouts can only be available if the player is wagering the maximum number of credits in the betting round.

The following table summarizes the theoretical payouts of some of the most popular video poker games:

Rank Game Payout % Max Payout
1 Jacks or Better 98.45% $140,000
2 Destiny Poker 98.48% $100,000
3 Deuces Wild 98.45% $100,000
4 Double Bonus Poker 98.91% $80,000
5 Joker Poker 98.91% $80,000
Expert insight icon Expert Insight:

Video poker is similar to blackjack in the fact that there is an optimal strategy involved. If you get it wrong, that RTP will reduce.

Fortunately, strategy charts are available online. While these charts might not come with the software, a Google search will reveal the perfect strategy. While it’s not quite as straightforward as the blackjack strategy chart, it doesn’t take long to get to grips with it.

Best-paying vs. fastest withdrawals

It is important to note that on this page, we are highlighting the online casinos that offer the highest RTP. But if you win at these sites, withdrawal speeds can still vary.

If withdrawing money fast is more important to you than theoretical payouts, then you will want to check out our page dedicated to the fastest paying online casinos.

And below, take a look at some of the most popular online casino payment methods.

Wrapping up

Truthfully, whether or not a casino is high paying depends on how you use it as well as your luck on any given day. With that said, some offer more high-RTP games than others, which we’ve broken down at length above.

If you seek out the games we have provided in this page, you are certainly not guaranteed to win. However, you should stack the odds more in your favor than by choosing at random. Always practice responsible gambling.

Best Payout FAQs

Right now, BetMGM Casino has the best payout. That is based on its 98.2% RTP rate, currently the highest in the industry.

Blackjack Xchange is currently the highest paying game at multiple casinos, including BetMGM, Caesars Palace, BetRivers and more. It is a high RTP table game.

Typically, it will be some sort of table game such as blackjack, roulette, craps, poker or video poker. Progressive jackpot slots often have the highest potential reward, but also come with more downside.

Yes, legitimate sweepstakes casinos like Chumba, Pulsz, and WOW Vegas allow players to redeem Sweepstakes Coins for cash prizes. They operate legally under U.S. sweepstakes laws and have paid out millions to players across the country.

RTP is calculated over thousands or millions of plays. While it gives you a statistical edge, short-term results vary, and no outcome is guaranteed. Still, choosing high-RTP games improves your long-term odds.
